opening WINdows to the future!

Mission Statement: Empowering young women through the exploration of
non-traditional careers and education.

The WOMEN IN NETWORKS (WIN) PROGRAM, a joint partnership between Soroptimist International of Sequim and Sequim High School, is proud to begin its 12th year! Since 1997, more than 1400 Sequim High School girls have benefited from programs, field trips and camaraderie. Current funding is generously provided by the Hastings Trust. WIN was founded to increase educational and career opportunities for local young women, with emphasis on non-traditional options. WIN is not a club; there are no officers, dues or fees.

  1. Applications for the 2009/2010 school year are available on-line (winprogram.org) & in the Sequim High School Career Center. Any female SHS student interested in exploring careers of the 21st Century (with special emphasis on non-traditional careers) is encouraged to join.
  2. Students may elect to participate in all or just a few of the available programs throughout the year. Past WIN activities include:
    1. ROPES Challenge Course,
    2. Kick-off Celebration featuring Dr. Bonnie Dunbar, retired NASA Astronaut,
    3. Just Yell Fire self-defense seminar,
    4. University of Washington & Western Washington University campus visits,
    5. NW Women In Trades Fair,
    6. Career and College Expo,
    7. State Capitol Legislative Tour,
    8. Career exploration opportunities,
    9. Panel of female guest speakers discussing their non-traditional careers.

The WIN Program acknowledges and appreciates the amazing involvement and advocacy of our community members. We look forward to a wonderful new year!

Trip to Olympia
Twenty-six WIN students traveled to the Capitol on February 21, 2008; chaperoned by Mitzi Sanders, SHS Career Coordinator, and 3 Soroptimists, these young women learned that a career in government is an attainable goal for all who are interested!

Following tours of the Governor’s office, Senate and House chambers, we were joined during lunch by Representative Lynn Kessler,  a strong advocate of WIN,  and Representative Kevin Van DeWege

In addition, two female lobbyists shared their career stories with our group, along with words of inspiration.

Following a “mock trial” in Supreme Court chambers, we boarded the bus and returned to Sequim.

JUST YELL FIRE
THE VISION:

  1. …a girl can go to the mall – without fear
  2. …a girl can go to a party   – without risk
  3. …a girl can walk home      – without dying

Dallas Jessup, “Just Yell Fire”

On Saturday, March 15, 2008, 31 Sequim High School WINgirls listened, observed and practiced techniques in order to make this vision their reality! The girls mastered 10+ techniques! Most have catchy names such as: hair comb; hands-up, scoop kick et al. – good memory cues, especially in a frightening situation! Each student left the seminar with a copy of the “Just Yell Fire” DVD, a smile on her face and a renewed sense of empowerment.
