WIN Program
Mitzi Sanders, our partner in the WIN Program wrote a wonderful review of the trip to the Museum of Flight back in March. We couldn’t have said it better, so here’s what Mitzi wrote:

The Museum of Flight trip was awesome! The women mentors were very impressive. They had women represented in all areas of aviation and aerospace: Pilots, Mechanics, Aerospace Engineers, Air Traffic Controllers, Flight Attendants, FAA Administrators, etc. Women of all age groups and titles ~ including the first and only woman to pilot the Concorde, several medal-bearing military Colonels and Captains, Boeing test pilots and engineers and the list goes on. These girls are SOOO lucky to have the WIN program. Don’t you wish we did????

The Museum of Flight did a great job of organizing the event. The girls signed-up in advance indicating their interest areas and the museum had them assigned to mentor groups according to their interests. We had a wonderful buffet lunch and in the afternoon the girls could choose a behind-the-scenes airport tour, a space shuttle simulation, a day-in-the-life-of a pilot or a tour of the museum’s new WW I & WW II exhibits.

Throughout the day they had various keynote speakers who shared their life stories to the entire group. They also had raffles throughout the day and the girls could win anything from a T-shirt, book or poster to flight lessons and helicopter rides. It was a great day! The only downside was being caught in Friday rush hour traffic on the way home
so a two-hour drive stretched into 3 1/2 hours. The girls had a great time. Even if they have no interest in an aviation career, I just know that they’ll think of these women throughout their lives and draw inspiration from the messages
they heard.

I put a reminder message in our bulletin about the trip and also sent a note to the girls in their classroom ~ even though, I was sure a couple would miss their alarms, but, much to my surprise, every one of them showed up on time for our early 5:45 a.m. departure. Amazing! It was good and I’m so glad we were able to pull it off this year.

Everyone is on the WIN Committee
At our April 12, 2005 meeting President Sandy announced that all members are on the WIN Committee and can choose which WIN events they want to participate in. She stressed how important it is for the girls to interact with Soroptimists. Penny has agreed to head up the WIN Committee for one more year. The committee will come up with a two-year plan; that will help for an easy transition for the next Soroptimist to step into the job as committee coordinator.

The remainder of the WIN year will consist of a trip to the Art Institute on May 10 and possibly another ROPES course. We will be having our first WIN Award Luncheon on May 24. A few Soroptimist members will share a little about their life experiences. All club members are encouraged to attend.
