Letter from the Editor
Dear Friends:
I was born and raised in Chicago. I am not a baseball fan, per
se, but yes, I am a die-hard Cub fan. I moved from Chicago
over two decades ago, but there’s something about being
a Cub fan that stays with you. Maybe it is the optimist in us.
Or maybe it is the cold that’s affected our brains. :>)
I
remember one year I played hooky from (high) school and went
to see
the Cubs on opening day. About eight of us took the Addison
Street bus down to Wrigley Field. We got there about 6 am thinking
we’d be one of the first groups in line. To our surprise,
many other people were already there – with blankets and
pillows. The doors were to open at 11:30 am, so we had a bit
of a wait. We wrapped ourselves in our own blankets, danced around,
rubbed our hands together – whatever we could to keep warm.
At 10:30 am (one hour earlier than expected) they opened the
doors. The crowd began to move, and move quickly. It became a
mob! People
were pushing forward and some people started to move when they
didn’t even have their feet on the ground. Blankets and
pillows were dropped and trampled over in the rush. Now how did
I get on the topic of the Cubs?
Oh yeah, I
was sitting thinking about 2004. What kind of slogan would
go for 2004? The cubs had slogans every year. Like: “Cubs
will be heaven in ’67", “Cubs will be Great
in ’68"; “Cubs will Shine in ’69".
You get the idea. In thinking of 2004, what came to mind is ROAR
in ’04. That brought to mind Soroptimist ROAR: Recruitment
Orientation And Retention. That brought to mind the Northwest
Region Membership Campaign: Three To Get Ready, Four To Go.
Clubs recruiting
three members between July 1, 2003 and March 31, 2004, receive
recognition nametag ribbons to wear at Region
Conference in 2004 and the club name goes in the Grand Prize
drawing. For each additional member that the club recruits over
the ‘Magic 3,’ the club is entered again in the drawing.
Our
club has already welcomed in three new members: Brenda Dunlap,
Casey
Murphy and Nanc Smith. And we have at least one, if not
three, more recruits waiting in the wings! We’re on a roll!
I was wondering why this topic came to mind at this time. Then
I remembered that it was around this time of year (Winter of
1997) that Soroptimist International of Sequim became a part
of my life. I attended meetings for several months before I was
officially inducted as a member. Like the die-hard Cub fan, I
am dedicated to the TEAM.
SI Sequim
has met our ‘Magic 3’ for recruitment,
but there’s still more Magic in our midst. Maybe our slogan
should be: “Still More In ‘04".
Light and Love,
Kathy Purcell
