Scholarships and Awards

Soroptimist International of Sequim provides scholarships, awards and recognition to youth, women and businesses within the community.
      
GIRL OF THE MONTH (GOM) - Each month the high school selects a Girl of the Month based not strictly on achievements in academics, but is also in recognition for endeavors in service, citizenship, or athletics. This is not a monetary award. The girl and her parents/guardian are invited to our meeting where she is recognized by the club and awarded a certificate.

VIOLET RICHARDSON AWARD – First Place: $500 to the volunteer, $250 to the organization. Second Place $250 to the volunteer. Award advertised in September. Applications due December 1. The Violet Richardson Award was established to recognize outstanding contributions by young people for the improvement of the quality of life of their fellow citizens. High school students in the Sequim School District are eligible to apply for this merit award and which is not based on academic achievement. Students must demonstrate a commitment to improving the life of others, and involvement in family, school activities, and service in the community. Click here for a writeable application form.

WOMEN'S OPPORTUNITY AWARD (WOA) – $1000. Award advertised in September. Applications due December 15. The WOA was established in 1972 to aid the mature woman to enter or re-enter the job market, or to further her skills and training to upgrade her employment status. This is a $1000 award and is available to women who are the head of the household and have financial responsibility for their dependents. Click here for writeable application form.

PROFESSIONAL TECHNICAL AWARD – $1000. Award advertised in February. Applications due April 1.
The Progressive Technical Award is given to a student enrolled in a non-degree program leading to a certificate or license. Such programs are normally found in vocational technical schools or 2-year community colleges. The $1000 award is used for tuition or needed supplies.

CONTINUING EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIPS – $1000. Scholarships advertised in June. Applications due by July 20. There are three Continuing Ed Scholarships awarded each year. These awards are for $1000 and applicants are solicited through the newspapers and Peninsula College in June.

HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS – $1000. These are chosen in May.  In the past we have given six scholarships to graduating high school seniors. Recipients are chosen based on criteria consisting of academic achievement, community involvement, GPA, goals, and need as set forth in their scholarship notebooks. These awards have been for $1000.
